Dr. Michael Wei is a highly qualified and experienced ophthalmologist trained in Australia, specializing in retinal and macular disorders, refractive cataract surgery, and general ophthalmology. He has expertise in treating retinal and macular disorders and extensive experience in performing all forms of retinal lasers and intravitreal injections. Additionally, he is a skilled cataract refractive surgeon, committed to performing surgeries using the latest techniques and technologies.
Dr. Wei obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from The University of Auckland, New Zealand, and a Masters of Ophthalmic Science from The University of Sydney. He completed his specialist ophthalmology training at the prestigious Sydney Eye Hospital Network, followed by further training as a Senior Registrar at Royal North Shore Hospital, focusing on retina, complex cataract surgery, and glaucoma. After completing his specialist training, Dr. Wei pursued a one-year medical retina fellowship under the mentorship of Professor Paul Mitchell at Westmead Hospital, where he gained significant expertise in managing retinal and macular disorders, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, and other macular diseases. He also became proficient in performing all forms of retinal lasers and intravitreal injections. During this time, he served as a sub-investigator in numerous international clinical trials for new therapies targeting macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular occlusion.
Subsequently, Dr. Wei underwent a retinal fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, recognized as Canada’s busiest retinal unit. There, he acquired extensive experience in managing difficult and complex vitreoretinal conditions, with a particular focus on the minimally invasive treatment of retinal detachments through pneumatic retinopexy. Dr. Wei further developed his surgical skills by utilizing the latest 3D heads-up visualization systems, including Alcon Ngenuity and Zeiss Artevo 800 technologies.
Dr. Wei has authored several papers published in international peer-reviewed journals and has presented his research at both local and international scientific conferences. He is actively involved in the education and training of ophthalmology registrars, medical students, and optometrists.
Dr. Wei is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists (ANZSRS) and the Australian Medical Association (AMA).
He is fluent in Mandarin and the Hokkien/Taiwanese dialect.
